Ethiopia Chelbesa – tradition from the Yirgacheffe region

Chelbesa is one of the best-known coffee-growing areas in Gedeb, part of Ethiopia's renowned Yirgacheffe region. Its high elevation, cool climate, and iron-rich acidic soils create coffees celebrated for their floral aromatics, vibrant fruit character, and remarkable clarity. Coffee is grown primarily by smallholder farmers, who cultivate it in small garden plots alongside crops such as enset, avocado, and papaya. Processing and quality control are managed by Kuri Mountain Coffee, a family-owned company whose coffee-growing heritage dates back to 1945 and which focuses on full traceability and meticulous processing throughout every lot.
After harvest, the ripe cherries are carefully sorted and depulped before undergoing fermentation and washing to remove the remaining mucilage. The coffee is then dried on raised African beds, where it is regularly turned and closely monitored throughout the drying process. This washed processing method produces a clean and elegant cup with bright acidity, pronounced sweetness, and the distinctive character that has made Yirgacheffe coffees famous.
